Georgie Update 12th December
HIP OPERATION CANCELLED
Georgie was back at Liverpool Small Animal Hospital on Friday for a pain management clinic. We explained to them that her new pain killers seemed to be helping her but she was still nibbling her side a lot in the evening.
The consultant explained that her back muscles are in pain due to the fact that she overcompensates with her front legs. He wanted to use acupuncture to help relieve the pain. We were a little unsure at first that this would have any effect on her but we were very wrong.
He was only going to put a couple of needles in for the first time so she didn’t get scared but she reacted so well to it that he did the complete session. She was very relaxed and we didn’t even have to hold her. She was obviously finding it very relaxing and wasn’t scared at all. If we hadn’t been there to see it we wouldn’t have believed that it could have such a dramatic effect on her.
She seemed very relaxed that evening and really enjoyed her hydrotherapy session the following morning. The effects lasted for a few days but she is starting to cease up again.
She is now booked in for weekly acupuncture sessions for the next few months and we are keeping a diary of her exercise, pain killers and her demeanour to see if we can establish when she seems to be in the most pain. We also have to massage Georgie by stroking her down her back about 40 times a minute. She seems to really enjoy this and it should help relax her. We are also using hot water bottles wrapped in towels in her bed to see if warmth helps as she always chooses to lie by the radiator whenever she can.
The hospital are hoping that we will be able to understand and manage Georgie’s pain better so that we will not have to do the first hip replacement for another 12 months. Fingers crossed !!
