The Gowy country park near Mickle Trafford

Built on what was once the Gowy landfill, this is a flat walk with woodland and a small river running through it (perfect for dogs that like a paddle)

The Scenery can be beautiful (when not looking at the landfill) and there is lots to see – from the swans on the river to the cows/sheep in the field.

There are 2 pubs within a short distance of the site – both have nice beer gardens so you can enjoy a drink while your dog can relax after a nice walk.

The park is being expanded still further and offers good paths to walk on as well as some nice riverside walks.

Good points:

A dog walkers paradise, as very few people go there who don’t have dogs so its great for socialising (for you and your dog!)

The wooded area is excellent for letting the dogs run through, and there are no roads within the area.  It offers a real variety of walks within a small area and has a huge open field where the dogs can play.

Bad Points:

No lights so walking if difficult in the dark winter months, there is also some noise from the landfill (tractors) and the shots from the bird scare devices.  Parking is also limited.

Please also be aware of the wildlife which can be scared by the dogs.  There are lots of cows in the area, as well as the Gowy's natural wildlife of Newts, families of swans and lots of Rabbits!

Overall – A good overall walk within a small contained area.  It is well maintained and has lots of friendly dogs and their owners!

How to Find it:

Travelling from Chester, follow the A56 (Warrington Road) through Mickle Trafford.  You will pass the Shrewsbury arms pub on your left, followed by the Nags head – the entrance to the park is immediately after the Nags head pub (not signposted).  Follow the small track and you will find parking and a turning area.  Enter the park through the gates and you will see a notice board with a map and details on the rare species of animals which live in this park.
