Talacre, North Wales

A wonderful, unspoilt beach with sand dunes and an easy walk to the sea - this is most dogs idea of heaven!  It is especially good to visit during the Winter months when it is not so busy, but as it is such a wide expanse of sand, it is easy to find some space to play with your dog whilst taking in the wonderful views.  It is only 30 minutes drive from Chester and well worth the trip.  You'll recognise the lighthouse from the "visit Wales" adverts currently on television.

Good points:

Dogs go wild on sand! and to have the sea nearby means that they can paddle too.  Much of the sand dune areas are fenced off to allow the natural wildlife to survive the visitors, but there is still a huge open are and a small woodland walk.

Plenty of Poo bins, litter bins, and there are pubs and food outlets nearby.  There is good parking facilities and many of the dunes are linked by wooden paths making the beach easily accessible.

There are local shops to stop for water and some pubs with beer gardens where dogs are welcome!

Bad Points:

The beach can sometimes bring with it problems - take care if your dog chases birds as the seagull can often go quite far out to sea, and my dogs go crazy at the kite's which are often being flown on the beach.

It can be busy in the summer as it is still a popular tourist destination, ad of course remember that half of the beach will follow you home in your dogs coat!!!

Overall – The best local beach for dogs - you'll find many other dog walkers here and the mixture of steep dunes, flat beaches and the water means that it has something to offer everyone!

How to Find it:

Travelling from Chester, follow the A55 towards North Wales.  Take the Holywell turn off, and join the A548 costal road.  You will find Talacre well signposted from here.
