Georgie Update 20^th November

 

A DATE HAS BEEN SET

 

We have had the call from the hospital that we are both waiting for and dreading at the same time.  Georgie is to have her first hip replaced on Monday 10^th December. 

 

The operation will hopefully mean that Georgie will be in less pain and be able to enjoy her life even more than she does now.  The recovery process however is a long one as we have make sure that she does not dislocate the new hip. 

 

She will need to be confined to a small area for the first 8 weeks after the operation and is only allowed out in the garden to go to the toilet.  She cannot go up or down stairs, get up on the couch, jump, run or even go for a walk.  This is something that Georgie does not understand as we experienced when she was recovering from her knee operation earlier in the year.  She cries when we take the other dogs out without her.  Poor Georgie.

 

After the 8 weeks she will be examined by the hospital and if everything is ok is allowed to start short walks but it will be another 6 weeks before she is allowed off the lead.

 

It may seem a lot to put Georgie through but it is a decision that has been made after lots of careful consideration and discussions with the surgeons at the hospital.  Georgie is a very active and lively dog despite her abnormal hips.  She has only just turned 3 and has been on medication daily for over a year.  If she did not have this operation we don’t know what sort of damage the daily drugs are doing to her internal organs and it is unlikely her hips would support her into old age.

 

We believe we are doing what is best for our precious rescue dog.  She had a bad start to life but despite that and all the operations she has had Georgie remains one of the happiest and friendliest dogs anyone has ever met.

 

In the meantime Georgie is making the most of her walks and playtime and of course the important swimming sessions which really are the highlight of her week.
